Peterborough MP slams treatment of St. Michael’s Gate residents: “they are sick and tired of being sick and tired”

In a statement released after Monday’s public meeting on the issues facing residents of St. Michael’s Gate, Peterborough’s MP Fiona Onasanya has urged the private contractor Stef & Philips and Peterborough City Council to offer deeds, not words, to tenants:
During Monday’s meeting, promises were made to the residents of St. Michael’s Gate that the plethora of issues they are facing will be addressed.
I pressed for dates and was happy that dates were set out.
However, what concerns me is that these promises have been made before. Residents are getting sick and tired of being sick and tired! They want deeds not words, and so do I. The fact that there was no representative from Stef & Philips at this community meeting was disappointing, but unsurprising.
Even after widespread national news coverage, it is clear after regular contact with residents during my time as MP that there are still huge problems that need to be tackled. Bad cases of damp that are causing children to miss school, drafty rotting wooden window frames and more. This is simply unacceptable, and if Stef & Philips are in breach of any legal requirements then the council must hold them to account.
Not only that, but it is my intention to get this landlord company in front of the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee, so their business practices can be fully scrutinised in Parliament.
No tenant in Peterborough deserves to live in the inhumane conditions that have been described to me. Their cries for help have been cast aside for far too long. It is my hope that this meeting and agreed follow up is the start of a long overdue change in the living conditions at St. Michael’s Gate.
